Ashley Garrett and Alan K. “AJ” Jones’s term as HBS Fund Chairs began on July 1, 2015. The couple, who are both members of the MBA Class of 1987, are longtime Harvard supporters. They will serve as the School’s chief fundraising volunteers for the HBS Fund for Leadership and Innovation.
Jones and Garrett are based in New York City, where he is a Managing Director and Head of Global Private Equity at Morgan Stanley and she is a professional photographer. Both are active with a range of civic, cultural, and educational organizations, including Harvard College, the American Repertory Theater, George School, and Buckingham Friends School. At HBS, they have been regular reunion attendees, and Jones has served as a class fundraising leader during both reunion and non-reunion years, recently chairing their class’s 25th Reunion Campaign.
Garrett earned an AB in theater from Smith College and worked at Chemical Bank and MasterCard after receiving her MBA. Raised as a Quaker with a life-long interest in service, in 1994 she began working at the All Souls Soup Kitchen and for the next 19 years she took a leadership role—including serving as director—of this privately-funded operation that serves over 20,000 meals annually. Her new career as a professional photographer marries her love of the arts with her business skills. She has also worked as a voice actor, lacrosse and volleyball coach, admissions assistant, and community service coordinator at The Brearley School in New York City.
Jones earned an AB in biochemical sciences from Harvard College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. After graduating from HBS as a Baker Scholar, he joined First Boston, eventually becoming director of the High Yield Finance Group. His career at Morgan Stanley began in 1993 and has included numerous leadership positions including launching the firm’s European Leveraged Finance unit in 1997 and leading it for three years. He has held his current position, head of Global Private Equity, since 2007.
The couple is eager to help strengthen the case for alumni annual giving to the HBS Fund, which is a high priority for the current HBS Campaign because of its immediate impact and critical role in driving innovation and new initiatives at the School. “In a world with no shortage of daunting challenges, we believe in HBS’s ability to prepare leaders to meet these challenges,” said Jones when the couple made a significant gift to the HBS Fund on the occasion of their 25th Reunion.
