Bold Idea Takes Off
As a teenager, Abby Falik (MBA ’08) spent a summer living in a rural Nicaraguan village, an experience that inspired her to dream of ways she could help other young people have meaningful experiences in developing countries. At HBS, her dream advanced toward reality when she won the Social Enterprise Pitch for Change business plan competition for Global Citizen Year (GCY), a nonprofit she envisioned to provide American teens with a “bridge year” between high school and college to work abroad. Ready for a pilot launch this fall, GCY has won support from four foundations, and most recently, Falik was named an HBS Social Entrepreneurship Fellow. GCY’s teen recruits will receive two months of intensive training, after which they will spend six months living with a family in a rural community and supporting a local development project in Africa, Asia, or Latin America.
