Improving the environment through green spaces and commercial buildings
Daniel M. Gilbane (MBA 2005), senior vice president of Gilbane Building Co., a family-owned commercial construction company, is helping Houston become a greener city.
“We in the commercial construction business have become much more aware of the impact the environmental aspects of the built environment have on where and how you live.”
Gilbane is on the board of the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, which has helped transform 160 acres of land around the Houston Ship Channel into a stunning green space with hiking and biking trails, a bat sanctuary, a skate park, and much more.
“Houston is an incredibly underrated place in terms of its built environment,” he says. “There’s a lot of phenomenal civic and cultural and event spaces and beautiful landscapes that outsiders just aren’t aware of.”
The Partnership has just finished a $53 million capital campaign that is being used to add 14,000 native trees, 2.3 miles of trails, 450 lights, and other amenities to Buffalo Bayou.
