HBS Celebrates Wyss Gift
A newly renovated home for HBS doctoral students opened in September with a ceremony marking the renaming of Sherman Hall to Wyss House in honor of entrepreneur Hansjoerg Wyss (MBA ’65). His $25 million gift, the largest ever given to a business school doctoral program, will establish the Hansjoerg Wyss Endowment for Doctoral Education, providing students with additional resources to further their scholarly endeavors.
In his comments to faculty, staff, and students gathered for the event, Wyss expressed his hope that the gift would have a lasting impact. “Philanthropy in my definition is something that brings change and influences people,” he said.
That’s precisely what the gift will do for the School’s Doctoral Programs, Dean Jay Light said in his remarks. He noted that the most important issue facing MBA education today is the training of scholars who will become the teachers and researchers of tomorrow. With the Wyss gift, HBS will enhance its own doctoral training in a number of ways, including increased fellowships and stipends, additional support for field research, and new course development. While the Doctoral Program is relatively small, with roughly 100 students, it has an outsized impact on the School and beyond. Many of its graduates will go on to become faculty at HBS and other business schools, “making this a gift that will truly keep on giving for years to come,” said Light.
Wyss, chairman and CEO of Synthes, Inc., is a medical pioneer, revolutionizing the orthopedic-device market and changing the surgical approach to healing broken bones.
