Preparing middle school students for the opportunities that lie ahead
Kim Frock (MBA 1987) helped launch the Alternative School for Math & Science in Corning, New York, a middle school for science, technology, engineering, and math to give young students the skills they need to contribute to society. In this video, she explains the programs roots and results.
“I had done a lot of work supporting the public school districts and I was becoming more and more familiar with what was going on in the public schools in terms of student achievement levels and a rapid decline that you see in middle school.
“When you look at American college students now, only 14 percent are pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) degrees. We really need about 70 percent of our students to be graduating with proficiency in a STEM area, and so it is very, very important that we prepare kids at this age so that they have all of the opportunities available to them when they leave high school and head off to college.
“I took what I thought would be a temporary leave of absence in 2003 to help get the school started, and [now] over 70 percent of the students that go to school here are pursuing STEM degrees in college. [My husband] Wendell [Weeks (MBA 1987)] and I personally put up the first three years of seed money to start the school, and Corning provides all of this space at no charge.
“I really do believe that this is the most important thing that I could do with my time now and it really feels like everything that I learned prior to doing this was so I could do this.”
