An International Perspective

“I’ve been involved in international business ventures my entire career,” says Andrew L. Waite (MBA 1993), a generous supporter of global research at HBS. After majoring in civil engineering at England’s Loughborough University of Technology and earning a master’s degree in environmental engineering science from the California Institute of Technology, Waite spent several years with the Royal Dutch Shell Group in a variety of technical and project management roles in Norway, the Netherlands, the United States, and Egypt.

A former member of the HBS Alumni Board, Waite says his time at the School “opened my eyes to a whole new spectrum of opportunities” in the field of financing and building entrepreneurial energy services companies. His most recent focus as managing director at Houston-based SCF Partners is the development of portfolio company investments with international exposure. “In my industry, we often transfer ideas that have been successful in one geographic area to another,” he notes. “Global awareness is important in transferring technical knowledge, and also in recognizing different cultural values and strengths that can contribute to the success of an international organization.”

In establishing a named research fund, Waite is showing his support for the School’s emphasis on preparing students for careers in a global economy. “The HBS strategy of opening global research centers and dramatically increasing international case content is critical,” he states. In addition, he and his wife, AnnaLee Wilson Waite, value the opportunity to support an institution that provided them with a “life-changing experience.” “HBS has been a hugely significant part of our lives,” he says. “We are pleased to be able to make a meaningful gesture in return.”
