Although Sherry L. Coutu (MBA 1993) now works as an angel investor in Cambridge, England, some 3,000 miles from Boston, Harvard Business School remains close to her heart. “The words of my professors and my classmates are part of my life every day, and I’m certainly better for it,” says Coutu, chairman of Porpoise Ventures. “HBS allowed me to solidify what I was going to do with the passions that I had. My MBA gave me the freedom to explore all sorts of options that I wouldn’t have considered otherwise.”

A longtime donor to HBS, this year Coutu made a special 20th Reunion contribution to the HBS Fund for Leadership and Innovation. “I recognized the impact alumni giving has had,” she remarks, “and decided that this was the right time for me to make a gift that at least partially signals the benefits that I personally received, and continue to receive, from my HBS experience.”

Coutu, a former president of the HBS Alumni Association in the UK and organizer of the 2005 HBS Global Leadership Forum, explains that the School gave her the confidence to succeed. “HBS showed me the right path. I’m an entrepreneur, and I help create businesses—investing in others and in companies, ” says Coutu. “I also learned that you can be a philanthropic entrepreneur. I love that part.”
