Crowdsourcing the Capitalist's Dilemma

Prof. Clay Christensen and HBS alumni take on the challenges of business growth and job creation

The next time Professor Clay Christensen (MBA 1979) has a dilemma, he knows where he'll go for a solution: to HBS alumni.

Christensen, Senior Lecturer Derek van Bever (MBA 1988), and alumni of the Building and Sustaining a Successful Enterprise (BSSE) course recently published a crowdsourced discussion of "The Capitalist's Dilemma"—the challenges of innovating for long-term growth and job creation—in the Harvard Business Review. The team of more than 150 people (see below) collaborated using the OI Engine platform developed by Tom Hulme (MBA 2007) and his team at OpenIDEO.

The OpenIDEO model brings a group together in an online forum to solve a specified "challenge." The participating HBS alumni researched the issues of long-term growth and job creation, generated theories of and potential solutions for the issue, and refined and evaluated those ideas.

"It is so much more powerful than the normal academic method of doing research that I will never do that again," says Christensen. "Every time I do research I am going to do crowdsourcing from our alumni."

The project drew on the experience and input of alumni from 14 different classes and a dozen countries.

"We found that the alumni had a desire to relive the classroom experience," says van Bever. "This was a chance to consider big questions with smart people in an engaged environment."

That opportunity didn't end with publication. In the next phase of the project, the entire HBS alumni community and readers of the Harvard Business Review are invited to participate in the creation and dissemination of a toolkit for addressing the Capitalist's Dilemma.
