Fostering a synergy at work that benefits associates as well as customers
Ganesh Natarajan (AMP 169, 2005), CEO of Zensar Technologies, is cultivating a collaborative management philosophy and innovative HR policies to ensure its 7,000 associates help customers achieve their business needs. At the core of the India-based IT company is an inclusive culture ruled by essential values: customer sovereignty, innovation, excellence, integrity, people orientation, and social responsibility.
"It's not really a textbook leadership style," says Natarajan, who treats staff like extended family. "We have always believed that empowered people and a compelling shared vision build great companies, and Zensar's success is a visible result."
He knows employees personally, and adapts his style to suit their individual needs, but still expects a high level of performance. As Zensar has acquired firms in Boston, New York, Tokyo, and Hyderabad, it has spread this progressive mindset, which also has been the subject of an HBS case study. "People are people; it doesn't matter which nationality or which culture," explains Natarajan, who, in addition to leading Zensar, serves as chairman of the NASSCOM Foundation, which seeks to leverage the capacities and competencies of the ecosystem of the IT-BPM industry to promote an inclusive and sustainable India.
