Finding sustainable solutions for humanitarian crises
Robert Goodwin (GMP 3, 2007) believes professionals and their companies are the critical link in solving the world's most serious problems. As the cofounder of Executives Without Borders, Goodwin proved his case in developing countries by strengthening humanitarian outcomes and creating market-based solutions to difficult problems.
"Business can be the greatest force for good on this planet," says Goodwin. Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, he led the establishment of a nationwide recycling program that currently provides income and jobs for more than 1,500 Haitians daily and generated over $460,000 for Haitian communities. He also encouraged companies to invest, and Marriott will open up its first Port-au-Prince hotel in 2014.
In parallel, Goodwin worked with the US Chamber of Commerce and major multinationals to create the Business Corps, leveraging corporate expertise to strengthen and scale three of the top nonprofit organizations in Rio de Janeiro. In February 2014, Goodwin took on new roles as Mattel's director of corporate affairs and executive director of the Mattel Children's Foundation. Previously, he held senior positions at the US Department of Defense and the State Department, the White House, and USAID. Goodwin is a former military officer and graduate of the US Air Force Academy.
