Putting a spell on theatergoers
Alan Horn (MBA 1971) has brought a touch of magic to the big screen and record-breaking numbers to the bottom line as chairman of Walt Disney Studios and former president and chief operating officer of Warner Bros. Entertainment. At Disney, he oversees worldwide operations, including films from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, as well as Disney's music and theater divisions. At Warner Bros. Horn gave the green light to the Harry Potter series and Dark Knight trilogy, both critical and financial successes.
Bringing joy, humor, and the suspension of disbelief to audiences young and old—while also keeping an eye on revenues—has been Horn's focus during his career in film and television. "The hardest part is finding that elusive balance between the pure creative sensibilities that would drive one to do certain things in making a movie, and the business constraints that have to be put into place to make sure things are done responsibly," says Horn.
Previously, he served as chairman and CEO of Embassy Communications, co-owned by Norman Lear, and cofounded Castle Rock Entertainment, noted for producing Seinfeld and numerous hit films.
