Recasting environmentalism as a smart financial investment

A former managing director and partner for Goldman Sachs, where he spent 24 years, Mark Tercek (MBA 1984) is inspired by the opportunity to help businesses, governments, and environmental organizations work together in new, innovative ways. Tercek left Goldman Sachs in 2008 to head up the Nature Conservancy (TNC), the world’s largest environmental organization. He is leading TNC as it changes society’s mindset around the importance of healthy natural systems and demonstrates nature’s value as the foundation of our well-being and economic success.

“Investing in nature can produce very attractive business returns,” says Tercek. “Compared with man-made solutions, natural infrastructure often works better, costs less, and appreciates in value over time. And it provides a host of important co-benefits, like wildlife habitat, clean water, and recreational opportunities.”

In advancing TNC’s global mission, Tercek says that viewing nature through the lens of basic business principles can lead to win-win opportunities—investments in nature that produce good business results and good environmental outcomes.
