Transforming nonprofits with business-oriented insights that scale impact
Tom Tierney (MBA 1980) is working to empower social entrepreneurs, mission-driven organizations, and philanthropists to build a better world. The Bridgespan Group, the professional services firm he cofounded with Jeff Bradach (PhDOB 1992) in 1999, collaborates with social sector leaders to build their capacity and dramatically improve results.
“Never, at least in recent history, have there been so many people who have been so engaged in trying to make their communities and the world a better place,” says Tierney, chairman of the Boston-based firm. Bridgespan provides management consulting and leadership development services to some 350 clients, including the Salvation Army World Service Office, Harlem Children’s Zone, National Council on Aging, and KIPP Foundation. The core of Bridgespan’s strategy is anchored in knowledge: to capture and share insights and tools (for free) throughout the social sector. “We are trying to scale our impact on the world, not just our organizational size,” he explains.
Although a nonprofit, Bridgespan has close ties to Bain & Company, where Tierney served as worldwide managing director, and to HBS. The firm assisted School professors in writing several social enterprise cases, and Tierney chairs the HBS Social Enterprise Initiative’s advisory board.
