Powering on wireless electricity
Eric Giler (MBA 1982) is fueled by a mission to never have to “plug in” again. The CEO of WiTricity, a startup revolutionizing science with its magnetic resonance technology, hopes to soon relegate electrical wires and batteries to the past. “We are committed to building a company that fundamentally changes the world,” he says. "Anything with a cord or a disposable battery is a candidate for being replaced."
The technology, which generates less radiation than Earth’s magnetic field, allows the user to beam electricity wirelessly to light a light bulb or charge a cell phone. Giler envisions a future when a heart pump can recharge without surgery. “Talk about changing people’s lives,” he says.
The Massachusetts-based startup, which was the subject of an HBS case study, is already earning kudos internationally, having been honored as a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum. “This award underlines the fact that our technology is capable of enormous positive economic and environmental impact,” says Giler, whose entrepreneurial spirit extends to other areas of interest. He is the cofounder of Scratch Wireless, which is developing the nation’s first free cell-phone service that will run on open WiFi networks.
