Expanding the brand of the country’s largest magazine publisher
Ann S. Moore (MBA 1978), the first female chair and CEO of Time Inc., oversaw nearly 150 magazines and their brand extensions. During her tenure, she launched more magazines than Time founder Henry R. Luce and, as publisher of People, turned that magazine into a consumer powerhouse with numerous spinoffs, including InStyle, Real Simple, and People en Español.
People questioned her when, on graduation from HBS, Moore accepted the lowest paying of 13 job offers she received, to pursue her passion—magazines. Over the next two decades, she rose from financial analyst at Time magazine to lead Time Inc., the country’s largest magazine publisher, until her retirement in 2010.
In her keynote address to the W50 Summit, a 2013 celebration of the 50th anniversary of women in HBS’s two-year MBA Program, Moore advised: “Where you are headed is more important than how fast you are going. Always plan for the long-term strategy.”
