Ensuring a business’s profitability enables it to serve society
During the 2009 global recession, Mark Fields (MBA 1989) helped Ford Motor Company avoid government-financed bankruptcy. Now, as president and CEO, he is focused on serving customers around the globe with great products while building a strong, profitable business everywhere Ford operates.
“As we accelerate the development of our products, we are growing and investing more in product and capacity, which in turn contributes to economic solutions around the globe,” said Fields. “Our goal is to serve customers around the world with a full family of vehicles—small, medium, and large; cars, utilities, and trucks—each with the best quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design, and value.”
Global demand and increasing vehicle production in North America and Asia have resulted in the addition of thousands of jobs in order to continue the company’s growth. Fields explained the effect the company is having in India, for example, embodies founder Henry Ford’s mantra that it is “in Ford’s DNA to give back to communities.”
Said Fields, “Only a profitable business can be of service to society, both from an economic development standpoint, but also as a sense of responsibility to give back to the communities in which we live and work.”
