Tackling the data dilemma

In 2008, Meg Whitman (MBA 1979) was among those the New York Times identified as Most Likely to Be First Female US President. After a foray into politics—a gubernatorial bid in California—Whitman became president and CEO of Hewlett-Packard (HP), where she is bringing new life to the Silicon Valley firm with innovative products, services, and solutions to help companies transition to the new style of IT.
Since joining HP in 2011, Whitman has championed initiatives that help customers navigate the new realities of 21st-century technology, including the problems posed by power-hungry data centers. HP’s answer is the Moonshot server system, introduced in 2013, which uses 89 percent less energy and 80 percent less space, and costs 77 percent less than a traditional server environment. “No other company is taking on the data-center dilemma the way we are,” says Whitman.
Prior to joining HP, Whitman served as CEO of eBay for a decade, growing the company from 30 employees, and revenues of approximately $5 million in 1998, to 15,000 employees and revenues of approximately $8 billion in 2008.
