Multiple generations of computing
Throughout her career, Donna Dubinsky (MBA 1981) has worked on the next generation of computing. In the early days of Apple, she participated in the creation of personal computers, moving from a specialized tool for professionals to an essential tool for everybody.
In 1992, as president and CEO of Palm Computing, with founder Jeff Hawkins, she introduced the PalmPilot, the first successful handheld computer. Under Dubinsky’s leadership it became the fastest-selling computer and consumer electronics product in history and created a multibillion-dollar market.
Dubinsky and Hawkins later left Palm Computing to found Handspring, creator of the Treo smartphone, a handheld device that set the standard for next-generation smartphones.
They teamed up again in 2005 to found the software company Numenta, to become the catalyst for intelligent computing. Numenta has developed a new type of computer-memory system modeled after the human neocortex. The first product, Grok, detects anomalies in IT systems by automatically finding complex patterns in streams of data.
In reflecting on her career trajectory, Dubinsky says: “It’s been enormously satisfying to have been involved in successive generations of computing, where each one has had a huge impact on our lives.”
