A passion for the sea doubles the percent of ocean set aside for conservation

Ernesto Bertarelli (MBA 1993), an America’s Cup–winning sailor and avid scuba diver, understands the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. The former owner and CEO of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology company Serono has provided funding for the Chagos Island Marine Reserve in the Indian Ocean, the largest reserve of its kind on earth.
Bertarelli, among a small group of philanthropists who have chosen to support sustainability, has had a big impact on the environment—increasing the area of marine conservation from 0.5 percent to 1 percent. Within a few years, the Chagos fish population will expand by 150 percent. Recently, the Bertarelli Foundation also established a reserve around Belize's Turneffe Atoll. It is the world’s second-largest coral reef with more than 500 species of fish.
“To be successful, you have to be personally engaged,” Bertarelli commented. “When you see the benefit of your work, it touches your emotional fiber. Then you want to give more.”
