Committed to a goal of 'zero harm' in the mining industry

As chief executive of Anglo American, one of the world’s largest mining companies, Cynthia Carroll (MBA 1989) worked to improve safety. True to her word, Anglo American’s mine fatalities decreased by nearly 60 percent during her six-year tenure (2007–2013) as chief executive.

“We cannot rest until we have a mining industry in which everyone goes home safely to their family at the end of the working day,” says Carroll, the first woman and non–South African to lead the nearly 100-year-old company.

She used safety as a way to transform the culture of Anglo American, employing about 150,000 people in 45 countries around the world. Carroll also launched initiatives to improve health and education in the localities where the company operates. Her compassion, strategic vision, and business acumen had a deep impact not just on Anglo American, but on the entire mining industry as well.

The decisions Carroll made to curtail mine fatalities are the focus of a new case series at HBS, “Cynthia Carroll at Anglo American,” written by Professor Gautam Mukunda. When the first case was introduced in the fall of 2013 as part of the curriculum for the first-year LEAD class, students were able to interact with Carroll during a visit she made to HBS classrooms.
