Positive impact that hits home
Kiné Seck Mercier (MBA 2014), co-president of the Harvard Islamic Society, recalls a first-year HBS case study set in Saudi Arabia: “There was a lot of discussion about Islam, and there was a lot of misunderstanding about the difference between the religion and Saudi culture.” To bring perspective to the discussion, which she experienced as “very emotional,” Seck Mercier pointed out both myths and misconceptions.
Her work in this area continues as a leader of the Islamic Society, a role that has Seck Mercier organizing mixers and functions to promote dialogue and shared learning about her religious heritage. Not least among these is the belief that “you can be a highly performing business executive and also be a very religious person,” observes Seck Mercier. “Those two things can go together without any issue.”
She is interested in pursuing her career in Africa and came to HBS by means of a fellowship. “I still think about money in our local currency,” Seck Mercier says, “and with the two years’ cost of Harvard Business School, in my country I could buy a lot of real estate.” Seck Mercier says her fellowship means freedom to pursue any job she wishes: “I’m really going for something I love and something that has impact on my home continent.”
