A corporate leader’s legacy in India
When Ratan Tata (AMP 71, 1975) joined his family’s business in 1962, it was on the Tata Steel shop floor in Jamshedpur, India. From the ground up, Tata learned how to be an effective manager and a corporate leader who understands the global economy. Under his stewardship, the Tata Group has become a multinational conglomerate with interests ranging from technology to energy to consumer products. It is also a major employer and dedicated provider of philanthropic assistance in India.
“Apart from values and ethics which I have tried to live by, the legacy I would like to leave behind is a very simple one—that I have always stood up for what I consider to be the right thing,” says Tata, who served as chairman of the Tata Group from 1991 until his retirement in 2012.
The Mumbai-based firm now operates in 80 countries and comprises more than 100 companies. With its acquisition of Tetley Tea in 2000, the Tata Group became the second-largest manufacturer and distributor of tea in the world. Other notable acquisitions include Jaguar Land Rover and Corus, the second-largest steel maker in Europe.
