Leading in business and in public education
As cochairman of the board of Loews Corporation, Andrew Tisch (MBA 1977) has played a leadership role in one of the largest diversified companies in the United States. He is also using his skills to help improve inner-city education, working along with his wife to motivate more young people in grades 6 through 12 to pursue a college education. “Involvement in the community has always been part of my family’s DNA,” says Tisch.
After graduating from Cornell University, Tisch got his start at Loews Corporation, which developed out of the lifelong partnership of his father and uncle. Once solely a movie theater company, Loews now has interests in several industries, including commercial property and casualty insurance, hotels, energy exploration, and natural gas and liquids storage and transportation. Tisch was charged with turning around Bulova Watch Company, a subsidiary, which he did, saving it from bankruptcy and building a profitable business.
Numerous nonprofits also have benefitted from his leadership, including the Wildlife Conservation Society, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, and the City Parks Foundation, as well as educational institutions such as HBS and Cornell.
