An engine of innovation in public education

Drawing upon his background as an entrepreneur and educator, Stig Leschly (MBA 1997/JD 1998) leads Match Education, a reform group that seeks to redefine effective teaching and improve the educational experience of low-income students. It runs four urban public charter schools, manages its own graduate school of education, and operates a publishing and consulting arm that distributes the results of its work in large school districts.
“The goal in our schools is to break through to a situation where we can truly prepare kids for high-level college education and eventually, livelihoods,” says Leschly, the CEO of Match Education. It provides support and training to novice teachers so that they will become exceptional first-year teachers and, subsequently, successful longtime educators in high-need schools.
Leschly’s interest in education began as a teacher and assistant principal at an inner-city school in New York City, before HBS. After receiving dual graduate degrees at Harvard, Leschly sold Exchange.com, the e-commerce site he created, to Amazon. Years later, he returned to HBS to teach a course he developed, Entrepreneurship in Education Reform, which has become a mainstay of the School. Says Leschly: “There are a lot of management issues in education reform and we should be studying them.”
