Delivering HBS-style training for teachers
Inspired by an HBS lecturer who asked why there wasn’t a service academy for teachers, Tony Klemmer (MBA 1983) founded the National Academy of Advanced Teacher Education (NAATE) in Newport, Rhode Island, in 2010. The academy’s mission is to enhance, leverage, and retain great K–12 classroom teachers.
“Almost all NAATE participants report improved classroom practice, more impact outside the classroom with their peers and school leaders, and a renewed commitment to classroom teaching,” says Klemmer, whose observations of a charter school in a tough New York City neighborhood convinced him that top-quality K–12 education was possible everywhere.
Klemmer also served as assistant principal of his alma mater, Portsmouth Abbey, in Rhode Island, and launched several high-tech companies during his career. He credits HBS for inspiring him to pursue and nurture excellence: “My quality education is at the center of all I am able to do. I felt called to serve others in this arena.”
