Making travel possible for people with physical challenges

Darren Brehm (MBA 2007) launched an online travel guide and mobile app to help people with physical challenges find accessible hotels, restaurants, and activities, as well as emergency services. AbilityTrip.com and the online community it hosts provide accessibility information for popular destinations worldwide. AbilityTrip's mobile application supports the traveler on-site, featuring comprehensive information on five key destinations.

Currently the director of ingredients procurement for Kraft Foods, Brehm devotes much of his free time to the site. He understands the difficulties people who are physically challenged face—Brehm and his wife, Faith, were seriously injured in a 1993 car accident. He suffered a high-level spinal cord injury resulting in quadriplegia. "We were determined not to let this injury limit us. We've continued to live life to its fullest, working and traveling around the world," says Brehm.

Part of AbilityTrip.com's start-up funding came from a 2010 HBS fellowship award. "You have to be passionate about what you are doing to persevere through the tough times," Brehm says. "Regardless of what happens, I've learned so much that I can take with me to the next challenge."
