Last issue’s LAST LOOK: Thanks to Elmer Hulen (MBA 11/’47), who guessed that the photograph depicts the “parking lot” for one of the occasional picnics on Baker Lawn “with which the spouses of GI Bill veterans tried to enliven what must have been highly constrained lives.” He adds, “These young women were pretty much stranded in a pathetic little encampment of (former) U.S. Navy prefabs — known as ‘Tortilla Flats’— plopped down about where the very plush quarters of the AMP participants now stand.” Hulen believes the photo was taken in the summer of 1946 or 1947, although budding trees may suggest an earlier season and the automobile (at lower right) a later year. HBS research associate Joan McCue also suspects a picnic may be in progress, or that mothers working or studying at HBS used strollers to transport their children to an on-campus preschool or day-care center.
