In April, HBS students and alumni looking for capital ran their good ideas through the gauntlet.

As part of the New Venture Competition, the School's annual entrepreneurship challenge, 25 finalists— 8 student teams and 17 alumni teams—competed for $100,000 in start-up funding. Grouped in either a business or a social enterprise track, the fledgling companies pitched everything from early-stage Alzheimer's diagnosis technology to environmentally friendly lodging.

Below, the four that the competition's alumni judges—plucked from the start-up and nonprofit ecosystems—deemed prize-worthy.
