Mind Your Manners
As a newcomer to the Global A-list, some observers say China has a few things to learn about proper comportment in Western social settings. Etiquette is one of them, declares Sara Jane Ho (MBA 2012), a quintilingual Hong Kong native who has founded Institute Sarita, which charges $16,000 for a three-month "hostess course" on manners, entertaining, and decorum. Including, but by no means limited to, how to use a knife and fork, the teachings of her institute, Ho explained, constitute "the first step in creating a global etiquette movement" (Financial Times, December 21, 2012). Her clients, who are often globe-trotting managers of state-owned firms doing business in the West, "are very keen to learn about how to engage with foreigners; they want to learn an established set of rules for courteousness across cultures."
