Harvest Time
Victoria Ransom (MBA 2008) grew up on an asparagus farm in Scotts Ferry, New Zealand, a village of 65 people. The only girl in her high-school class, she went on to attend Macalester College in Minnesota, becoming the first college graduate in her family. After a stint at Morgan Stanley and after launching an adventure-tour start-up, Ransom cofounded Wildfire, a social media marketing company acquired last year by Google for a reported $350 million. Discussing her thoughts on leadership and the culture at Wildfire (where she remains CEO), Ransom recalled lessons learned in her youth in Scotts Ferry. "Everybody pitched in," she said. "Everybody worked hard. We talk a lot about the value of humility at Wildfire, about not getting ahead of yourself" (New York Times, January 26, 2013).
