Salter: Laying foundations, leveraging relationships. Photo by Stuart Cahill |
In his new role as senior associate dean for External Relations, Professor Malcolm S. (Mal) Salter is ready and eager to shift his focus from the classroom to the global community of 65,000 HBS alumni. The alumni community is an incredibly valuable asset for the School, says Salter, the James J. Hill Professor of Business Administration.
Salter (MBA 64, DBA 68), who assumed his new position July 1, joined the faculty in 1967 and has taught and helped develop a wide variety of courses in the areas of corporate strategy, organization, and governance. He succeeds Professor Howard H. Stevenson, who has been named senior associate provost for Planning and Resources for Harvard University. Stevenson remains a member of the HBS faculty.
In announcing Salters appointment, Dean Kim B. Clark said: I am confident Mal will continue to strengthen the Schools relationships on the alumni, corporate, and institutional fronts, and I look forward to working with him.
An immediate priority, says Salter, is to complete the Schools $500 million capital campaign, which continues through 2005. Initially, he will focus on raising awareness of the importance of fellowships, which ensure that qualified students get the financial support they need to attend the School.
Looking ahead, Salter says he wants to lay the foundation that allows us to leverage the energy and the relationships built during the campaign.
In addition to his scholarly activities, Salter has served as chairman of the elective curriculum in the MBA Program, and chairman of the Advanced Management Program and the Inter-national Senior Managers Program.
Salter is a trustee and director of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where he serves on the Finance Committee. He is also a founder of the Friends of Boston Art and a two-term overseer of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
