HBS has long been a global leader in shaping the practice of management education and research. HBS faculty have helped establish some of the world’s leading business schools. More recently, the School’s global research centers have ensured HBS faculty direct access to rapidly changing markets on four continents.

In recognition of the School’s leadership role, Gayle and Robert F. Greenhill (MBA ’62) have donated $15 million to establish the Greenhill Family Endowment for Global Research to support a broad range of international research and course development.

Greenhill is chairman of Greenhill & Co., a merchant-banking firm he founded in New York City in 1996. Previously, he had a long and successful career in investment banking, as president of Morgan Stanley and chairman and CEO of Smith Barney.

“This very generous gift gives us the opportunity to raise our international focus to a new level,” said Dean Kim B. Clark. HBS professor John A. Quelch, senior associate dean for International Development, noted that the gift “sends a clear message to our faculty — that it is imperative that we continue to study the world economy and the rapidly evolving needs of an increasingly global marketplace at close range.”

The School’s Global Initiative oversees research centers and offices in Buenos Aires, California’s Silicon Valley, Hong Kong, Paris, São Paulo, and Tokyo.

Foundation Supports Baker’s Historical Collections

Baker Library houses one of the world’s premier collections of rare business books and documents, with manuscripts dating from the 15th century. The desire to facilitate easier access to this treasure trove of information recently inspired a major gift to the School.

The de Gaspé Beaubien Foundation, a family foundation based in Montreal, has donated $10 million (Canadian) to HBS in honor of Philippe de Gaspé Beaubien II (MBA ’54) and his wife, Nan-b. The gift will fund the de Gaspé Beaubien Family Endowment and focus on supporting a wide range of innovative projects and programs associated with Baker Library’s Historical Collections.

Speaking for the family, Philippe de Gaspé Beaubien said: “We hope that our gift will increase the knowledge and awareness of this important collection for a wide audience and help reaffirm the fact that it is impossible to look to the future without learning from the past.”

Baker Library, now undergoing a major renovation, is one of the world’s most comprehensive business libraries. When it reopens in 2005, the Historical Collections Reading Room will be named in honor of the de Gaspé Beaubien family.

A native of Montreal, Philippe de Gaspé Beaubien transformed Telemedia Communications Inc. into a major media and communications company. He is now cochair of the Business Families Foundation of Montreal.
