In Brief
Q&A with Ali Allawi. After more than forty years in exile, Ali Allawi (MBA ’71) returned to Iraq in 2003 to serve in the new government. Disillusioned, he left for London in 2006 and wrote a critically acclaimed book about his experience.
Riding It Out. Paal Gisholt and Becky Minard (both MBA ’93) tell the story of how they launched SmartPak, a rapidly growing company in the horse- and dog-supplements business that landed smack in the middle of the melamine-pet food scare last spring.
Seeking Silent Voices. Successful decision-making depends on a candid airing of facts and opinions that may counter basic assumptions. Several HBS professors consider the cost to organizations when dissent does not or cannot surface, and suggest ways to make sure it does.
To the Rescue. In India, there’s no such thing as calling 911 in an emergency. At least not in most of the country. In one state, however, entrepreneur Ramalinga Raju (OPM 19, 1993) has launched a nonprofit emergency response service that has saved thousands of lives and is destined to spread nationwide.
