As of late April, thanks in part to two extraordinary gifts from Arthur Rock (MBA 51) and Frank Batten (MBA 52) (see details on Rock and Batten gifts), the total for The Campaign for Harvard Business School was a strong $340 million. With a goal of raising $500 million by December 2005, the campaign supports high priority initiatives at HBS, including fellowships for MBA and doctoral students; global research; faculty development; technology; and campus renewal. As Dean Kim B. Clark told the capacity crowd at Lincoln Center in New York City, If we do our work well, we actually can change the way the world works.
This spring, alumni across the country joined together to host regional events in San Francisco (March 27), Chicago (April 10), and New York City (April 15). All three regional events featured a faculty presentation; a multimedia show, HBS: Making a Difference; dinner; and remarks from Senior Associate Dean for External Relations Howard H. Stevenson, Campaign Chair C.D. (Dick) Spangler, Jr. (MBA 56), and Dean Clark.

On April 30, members of the HBS community gathered for the dedication of Connell House. The building (formerly named Fowler) honors the late William F. Connell (MBA 63), a visionary leader known for his business acumen, ethical standards, and philanthropy. After hearing from Dean Kim B. Clark and HBS professor Linda A. Hill, Connells wife, Margot, thanked the group on behalf of her husband and their six children. Family, faith, and education were Bills life, she said. To give back was Bills dream. Pictured above are members of the Connell family: Courtenay Connell, William C. Connell (MBA 02), Monica Connell Healey, Edward Toner, Jr., Terence Connell, Margot Connell, Thomas Healey, Timothy Connell, and Lisa McNamara.

Dean Kim B. Clark presented C. Bruce Johnstone (MBA 66) with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of five years of dedicated service as HBS Fund chairman. You have served your school with extraordinary fidelity and exemplary energy and skill, said the citation. You represent the best of what we do. The presentation took place at the annual HBS Fund volunteer appreciation dinner in New York City on February 25. As Fund chairman, each year Johnstone led almost one thousand volunteers and helped the Fund set a succession of records. The total raised from annual and reunion class campaigns during Johnstones tenure, which will conclude June 30, 2003, is an impressive $180 million and counting.
