Last November, the HBS California Research Center celebrated its fifth anniversary with a festive gathering at Accel Partners Palo Alto office. As the Schools first off-site research center, the CRC laid the groundwork for subsequent offices in Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Paris, and Tokyo. Since its inception in 1997, the CRC has produced 109 cases and 29 additional teaching materials. It has also worked on a variety of research projects and often acts as the West Coast representative for the School.
To thank outgoing CRC steering committee chairman Arthur Rock (MBA 51), CRC executive director Christina L. Darwall (MBA 75) and her staff wrote a mock case about Rock, a legendary founding father of the venture capital industry. Rock, who was presented with the framed case by Dean Kim B. Clark, passed the chairmanship on to James W. Breyer (MBA 87), managing partner at Accel.
Meanwhile, across the Pacific, the Japan Research Office officially opened in Tokyo last December. The office, part of the Schools Global Initiative, provides assistance for faculty conducting research in the region.
