Seven Strategy Questions: A Simple Approach for Better Execution
In his new book, Seven Strategy Questions, Charles M. Williams Professor of Business Administration Robert Simons explains how managers can identify holes in their planning processes and make smart choices. To read an excerpt from the book outlining the seven questions every manager should ask, see http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/6493.html.
Introverts: The Best Leaders for Proactive Employees
Do you think effective leadership requires gregariousness and charisma? Think again. Introverts can actually be better leaders than extroverts, especially when their employees are naturally proactive, according to a forthcoming article in the Academy of Management Journal by Associate Professor Francesca Gino and colleagues. See http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/6494.html.
Reversing the Null: Regulation, Deregulation, and the Power of Ideas
Who is to blame for the recent financial crisis? The fault lies partly with scholars of economics, says David Moss, the John G. McLean Professor of Business Administration. In this working paper, he argues that an academic focus on government failure in the second half of the 20th century led to the general idea that less was always more when it came to regulation, which, in part, contributed to the crisis. To that end, he calls for a fundamental shift in academic research on the government’s role in the economy. See http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/6575.html.
Valuation When Cash Flow Forecasts Are Biased
The valuation of forecasted cash flows can be an inaccurate process, especially when the forecasts are created by optimists who neglect to consider worst-case scenarios. In this working paper, Willard Prescott Smith Professor of Corporate Finance Richard Ruback lays out methods of valuing forecasted cash flow when the predictions are biased upward. See http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/6547.html.
