Crowning Achievement
One day in 1994, Sarah Bazey (OPM 32, 2003), the owner, president, and CEO of Minnesota-based Simplex Construction Supplies, chartered a helicopter for an aerial view of one of her company's projects. When the aircraft crashed and exploded, Bazey suffered third-degree burns over 40 percent of her body. After numerous medical procedures, including 15 surgeries, Bazey returned to work. She has since joined the board of the Phoenix Society, a national nonprofit that supports and empowers burn victims, and has worked with burn patients since 1995 as a hospital volunteer. Bazey, who has been a professional figure skater and instructor, recently won the title of Mrs. International, a pageant for married women from the ages of 21 to 56, the East Central (MN) Post Review (August 22, 2012) reported. Her new role, Bazey said, would help further "my mission to connect the burn community throughout the world, including the family and friends of burn victims."
