Taking Care
Frustrated by her inability to find high-quality care for her children, Sheila Lirio Marcelo (MBA 1998/JD 1999), a former consultant and executive at Upromise, founded Care.com in 2006. Now the largest online care destination in the world, the company has raised in excess of $100 million in investment funds across more than 15 countries, and has 7 million members who avail themselves of caregiving services for children, seniors, and pets. In a conversation with Bloomberg Businessweek (September 4, 2012), Marcelo had this cautionary advice for newly minted MBAs: "Don't let the business school Kool-Aid go to your head. There's this concept that when you graduate, especially from the top schools, you're ready to conquer the world. There's an elitism that sets in, and so much of leadership is helping other people and being selfless."
