In military parlance, a rally point is where soldiers scattered on a mission are to meet up. So when Iraq veterans Yinon Weiss (MBA 2011) and Aaron Kletzing (HBS 2013) launched a start-up to help veterans network and land civilian jobs, they dubbed it RallyPoint. Born and raised at the Harvard i-lab, RallyPoint won the $100,000 MassChallenge start-up competition last fall and was a runner-up in the 2012 HBS Business Plan Contest. In December, it announced that it had raised $1 million from angel investors.

As Weiss explained to the Boston Herald, veterans are emerging from a military culture in which "introducing themselves and creating a network aren't necessarily skills they've cultivated." A free-to-veterans service, RallyPoint is also good news for the Defense Department—which annually reimburses states some $1 billion for veteran unemployment benefits—and for employers, 65 percent of whom say they'd prefer to hire a veteran over an equally qualified, nonmilitary candidate.
