Eight Join HBS Faculty
Topics: Career-Career ChangesCareer-Career ChangesEducation-Business EducationHuman Resources-Selection and StaffingAs an HBS doctoral student and recipient of the Wyss Award for Excellence in Doctoral Research, George Serafeim (DBA ’10) coauthored the paper “The Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility on Investment Recommendations,” which was selected as “best paper” by the Academy of Management. After completing his doctorate, Serafeim accepted a teaching position at HBS, one of eight newcomers to join the faculty.
Serafeim, an assistant professor in the Accounting & Management Unit, teaches the first-year course Financial Reporting and Control. His research interests include capital markets and firms’ social, environmental, and governance performance.
Lakshmi Ramarajan, an assistant professor in the Organizational Behavior Unit, also had ties to HBS before joining the faculty. After earning her doctorate in management from Wharton, she spent the past two years as an HBS postdoctoral fellow. Her research focuses on how people can work fruitfully across social divides. Prior to her academic career, Ramarajan worked in international development in West Africa focusing on conflict resolution.
Douglas Fearing, an assistant professor in the Technology & Operations Unit, teaches the first-year course Technology and Operations Management. His research focuses on techniques to evaluate and improve the performance of complex systems in the airline and sports industries. Fearing earned his Ph.D. from MIT in operations research and was recognized for his excellence in teaching. His coauthored research on golfer performance has aided the PGA’s development of a new metric to measure putting skills.
Francesca Gino is an associate professor in the Negotiation, Organizations Markets Unit and teaches negotiation in the MBA Program. Her research focuses on judgment and decision-making, social influence, and ethics. Gino’s work has been published in a number of journals and featured in the New York Times, Newsweek, and Psychology Today. A native of Italy, she earned her Ph.D. in economics and management from the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa.
Shon Hiatt, an assistant professor in the Organizational Behavior Unit, teaches the first-year course Leadership and Organizational Behavior. His research explores issues related to institutional change, innovation, industry and technology evolution, and strategy in diverse economic contexts. Hiatt received a Kauffman Entrepreneurship Dissertation Fellowship award for his work on the U.S. biodiesel industry at Cornell University, where he earned his Ph.D. in organizational behavior.
Vineet Kumar is an assistant professor in the Marketing Unit and teaches first-year Marketing. He has a strong interest in the interface of technology and marketing and has studied how marketing is impacted by technology that enables firms to learn more about consumers and competitors. Kumar earned his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University, where he received the William W. Cooper Doctoral Dissertation Award.
Magnus Torfason is an instructor in the Entrepreneurial Management Unit and teaches the first-year course The Entrepreneurial Manager. His research focuses on how behavior is influenced by the social structures of individuals and organizations. He is cofounder of handPoint, a software company based in Cambridge, England, that develops payment systems for handheld devices. Torfason received his doctoral training from Columbia Business School.
Gwen Yu, an assistant professor in the Accounting & Management Unit, teaches the first-year course Financial Reporting and Control. Her research focuses on how accounting information affects economic outcomes, specifically, how accounting standards and corporate disclosures influence capital allocation decisions. Yu’s work has been cited in the New York Times. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
