Seeds of Green
Congratulations to Erika Diamond and Annie Fishman (both MBA 2007) on their founding of the HBS Green Business Alumni Association as reported in the September Bulletin. It’s great to see their efforts and the related story of HBS alumni in green businesses being recognized.
It should be noted that these green fruits are born from the entrepreneurial seeds sown over the years by HBS faculty, such as Howard Stevenson, Lynn Bollinger, and Georges Doriot, to name a few who influenced so many.
I am personally grateful to John McArthur, Pat Liles, and Abe Zaleznik for their wise counsel in guiding this then-young MBA student in both these directions—six entrepreneurial start-ups and then a seventh one that is green to boot! The seventh, GreenEarth Cleaning, owns 140 patents in 42 countries and after 12 years is the world’s largest environmentally friendly dry-cleaning process and trademarked brand. While “green” (as it relates to the environment) was not in the vocabularies of John, Pat, and Abe in 1969, behaving responsibly certainly was.
Thanks to all who have led and continue to lead the School with results that bear fruit long after their appointed class times!

Cities and Climate Change
Thank you for the article “The City Solution” in the September Bulletin. Work like this gets people thinking more about the critical challenges we face. It’s up to cities worldwide to lead the way in reducing the impact of climate change, and I’ll continue speaking out in support of New York’s and the C40’s innovative approaches.

Environmental Action
In the article “The City Solution,” Mayor Bloomberg states that climate change is “the greatest challenge that humanity has ever created for itself.” Let all political leaders worldwide pledge to end government subsidies that promote the overconsumption of hydrocarbons.

Spangler Tribute
The September Bulletin article “The Spangler Effect” was a very nice tribute to C.D. “Dick” Spangler Jr. (MBA 1956) and his tremendous gift to HBS. His daughter, Anna Spangler (MBA 1988), was a classmate of mine. Her family’s legacy to HBS is greatly respected and appreciated. I visited the Spangler Center this past May, and I was so impressed. This is by far the finest student facility of any university in the world and definitely enhances the greatness of HBS and Harvard University. Thank you, Mr. Spangler, Anna, and your family.

Green Energy and Government Subsidies
Regarding the article “Green Day” in the September issue, I have two comments. First, there appear to be no “green” native energy projects that are economical without government subsidy. Second, US natural gas reserves can be produced for far less than any alternative source, and US crude oil reserves are on the way to do the same. My guess is that HBS grads are involved in conventional energy development and are steering clear of these heavily subsidized green alternatives.

That’s Me!
In the March issue’s Last Look photo of a group of women in military fatigues, I was surprised to see how much one of the women looked like me. Later, however, I realized that the women might not actually be in the military: the varied salutes and the microphones gave it away. I was guessing it was part of the HBS Show, which I was in as a partner to Paul Wylie (MBA 2000). And then I recalled borrowing a friend’s fatigues. Her name was on the woman’s uniform in the picture. Sure enough, the woman in the photo who looks like me actually is me!
