It is often said that "Washington is broken," but this reflects a common misunderstanding of the problem. Washington isn't broken--it is delivering exactly what it's currently designed to deliver. The problem is that our political system is no longer designed to serve the public interest. Rather, it has been structured and optimized over time to benefit the interests of two private, gain-seeking organizations--our major political parties and their industry allies.
In this session, Professor Michael Porter and his coauthor Katherine Gehl will discuss their new work which applies the lens of industry competition to politics. By analyzing politics industry structure using the five forces model, they hope the audience will better understand how our political system actually works, what is driving poor outcomes, and how we can recapture our democracy.
