Improving Wellness Through Better Nutrition
With a background in consumer health care at Johnson & Johnson, when Beth Burrough (MBA 1991) joined Mom’s Meals Nourishcare as a partner and chief marketing officer in 2006, she already understood the company’s potential to improve the lives of seniors and medical patients.
“Many age-related diseases—heart disease, renal disease, celiac, diabetes, cancer—are influenced by the food we eat,” Burrough notes. By providing freshly made meals with ingredients customized to meet specific nutritional needs, Mom’s Meals helps seniors to stay healthy or manage chronic illnesses while maintaining the dignity and independence of living at home.
The Iowa-based company’s heat-and-eat meals are delivered in 48 states by its own trucks or third-party carriers. Medicaid or other government subsidies generally pay for the meals, explains Burrough, who is a strong advocate of including nutrition in recovery and health maintenance plans. “Much of my job is to educate health care decision-makers about the importance of food in improving patient outcomes.”
A “first-class Girl Scout” growing up, with parents who emphasized the importance of service to others, Burrough says her job at Mom’s Meals, along with volunteer work in environmental causes, gives her a sense that she is “empowering people to make positive changes in their lives. That goal has always been a huge driver for me.”
