Building Startup Skills for Business and Life
Bill Daugherty (MBA 1991) believes in the power of entrepreneurship—not just to launch successful businesses, but also to jump-start successful lives.
After selling his profitable Internet search company in 2004, Daugherty created a program designed to give students in an under-resourced Rhode Island school district the skills to develop and run their own startups and to begin to think more broadly about careers.
E360 is a year-long entrepreneurship curriculum at the Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center, a state-funded alternative high school in Providence. Daugherty, who created the program in 2004 and taught the first few sessions himself, says, “My belief going in was that E360 would give at-risk kids an opportunity to take control of their futures.” The curriculum fosters entrepreneurial skills and attitudes through classroom sessions, internships, and a year-end business plan competition that awards funding to the most promising ventures.
E360 has inspired hundreds of student-led startups and is now based at the Met School’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, founded in 2012 as the nation’s first dedicated business incubator for public high school students.
Daugherty cochaired the fundraising campaign and serves as the center’s executive chair. “The thrill, for me,” he says, “is getting students excited about the future and moving on to higher education.”
