Investing in Scalable Impact on K-12 Education
Vivian Wu (MBA 2000) manages Zuckerberg Education Ventures, an impact investing initiative that supports education entrepreneurs who are developing scalable businesses that will improve learning outcomes and increase access to high-quality education for large numbers of pre-K-12 students.
In this video, Wu talks about what inspired her decision to focus her career on making a difference in education.
“I realized a few years ago, because of a friend who asked me what problem in the world was something I felt compelled to solve, that it was this question of solving the problem for kids who really want to learn and giving them access to high-quality education. I realized that I felt very motivated to make sure that was something that was possible.
“I now have launched and am running a new education impact-venture-investing initiative for Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, which is part of their broader educational philanthropy goals to improve learning outcomes and also increase access to quality education. What we are looking to do is support entrepreneurs and invest in companies that we think can make a very scalable impact on K-12 education, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. But also to find companies that we believe can be self-sustainable and also successful businesses, and ultimately scale what they are doing, and the transformation and innovation that they are delivering, to a very large number of students.
“HBS has been really inspiring from my standpoint. Just seeing how other classmates and other alumni have been able to take their experience and their skills and do such incredible things is one of the reasons I was inspired to do something like this. In large part, it is kind of leveraging that culture of wanting to make a difference. It is leveraging the desire to be a leader and to make an impact and to be a problem solver and actually make the change happen that I see needs to happen.”
