Balancing Progress and Preservation
In his work managing real estate investments at Samson Investment Partners in New York, Lloyd Zuckerberg (MBA 1990) often draws on the same sensibilities that guide his leadership of the nonprofit New York Landmarks Conservancy. “I don’t think you should put your values aside when you decide how you’re going to make money,” he says.
Zuckerberg’s career combines extensive experience in large-scale New York redevelopment projects and a lifelong respect for the impact of the built environment on the quality of everyday life. After involvement in the high-profile restoration of Grand Central Terminal, Bryant Park, and the surrounding neighborhood—working for a time with Dan Biederman (MBA 1977), a pioneer in revitalizing urban spaces through public-private partnerships—Zuckerberg joined the family-owned Samson Investment Partners in 2001. His interest in land preservation issues on Long Island has led to several ventures involving conservation easements that create economic value from open-space preservation.
As chairman since 2013 of the New York Landmarks Conservancy, Zuckerberg looks for ways to bridge the sometimes disparate goals of development and preservation in projects such as the recent renovation of historic public spaces at The Plaza hotel or the proposed redevelopment of the South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan.
“The Conservancy sees itself as a voice of reason,” he notes. “We’re not anti-development, but we don’t believe the city is a vast template where the real estate community should exercise its greatest fantasies at the expense of our architectural heritage.”
