A personal mission to serve veterans
Maura Sullivan (MBA 2009) served as assistant secretary for public and intergovernmental affairs at the US Department of Veterans Affairs in 2014-15, where she helped to correct mismanagement problems that plagued the agency.
“I can’t imagine anything more worthy of our time and effort and hands and hearts,” said the former marine captain and Iraq veteran.
Sullivan deployed to Fallujah in 2005, and returned with a commitment to help the young marines she sent into dangerous situations.
“The one percent who step up in time of war are the best part of this country. I found there the desire to take care of them and their families,” she said. “That experience shaped what led me to HBS.”
While later working at PepsiCo, Sullivan was appointed by President Obama to the American Battle Monuments Commission, which resulted in her attending military ceremonies and memorials at 21 overseas cemeteries in 2010. Last year’s controversy at Veterans Affairs compelled her to return to public service full time.
“My younger brother, Kenneth, is an infantry officer in the marines and our future customer. Everyone on active duty is a future customer,” she said. “It’s the beginning of a long journey and the outcome deeply matters.”
