Supporting new art by bringing private funding to public museums and spaces
Bridgitt Evans (MBA 1986) loves contemporary art for its ability to challenge existing norms. Now she is transforming the industry in much the same spirit with VIA Art Fund— Visionary Initiatives in Art—a new model of funding for contemporary art and artists.
“Traditionally, patrons have been one or even two steps removed from the artists themselves,” says Evans. “At VIA, we work directly with artists, meeting as a group to learn, discuss, and vote on which projects we will support.”
Since she launched VIA in 2013 with cofounder Lisa Schiff, an art advisor, Evans has built a national collective of patrons who work directly with artists to back a variety of projects. Some are major site-specific installations in prominent public spaces, and biennale and museum contexts. Other grants support the entire creative ecosystem, such as funding The Exhibitionist, an international professional journal for curators.
“There is an appetite for innovation and creativity right now,” Evans says. “There’s a movement, and you can’t stop it.”
