Keeping an iron grip on Nigeria's financial markets
Arunma Oteh (MBA 1990) has been leading the transformation of Nigeria's capital markets, improving their integrity and regulatory framework, since becoming director-general of the country's Security and Exchange Commission in 2010.
"Capital markets are transformative, as they do not only provide funding but also entrench best corporate governance practices while accelerating wealth creation and distribution, leading to better social cohesion," says Oteh. Previously, her distinguished international career included serving as group treasurer and vice president at the African Development Bank.
Oteh's bold decisions have cleaned up the Nigerian capital markets and her zero tolerance for improper acts earned her the nickname "Iron Lady." The reform efforts she champions have been hugely successful, as the country's stock market has almost tripled in size. A vibrant domestic fixed-income market is emerging, new products have been introduced, new trading platforms have been launched, institutions participating in the market have been strengthened, and there is greater public awareness of the critical role capital markets play. Oteh also has inspired creative ways to boost investor education, leveraging "Nollywood"—Nigeria's film industry, ranked third largest in the world—to promote a culture of saving and investing among Nigerians.
