An investment in meaningful results
Ending poverty in New York City is a monumental goal, but as president and chief operating officer of a modern-day nonprofit that bears the legendary moniker Robin Hood, Deborah Winshel (MBA 1985) uses her business acumen to effect social change. She and her team are transforming lives by providing nearly $1.5 billion in grants to the city's neediest residents since 1988.
Robin Hood is New York City's largest funder of emergency food programs and largest private funder of job training and housing programs. It serves nearly half a million struggling New Yorkers, investing more than $132 million in over 200 programs and schools in 2013. The organization's 12-12-12 Concert for Sandy Relief raised more than $50 million to help victims of the storm rebuild and recover.
Robin Hood takes a venture philanthropy approach to fighting poverty, making sure that investments in programs provide meaningful and measurable results. It is supported entirely by its board of directors; all public donations go directly to programs and services.
"Wanting to help your neighbors isn't enough. Proving how to help them effectively is the key," says Winshel, who previously held senior positions with the Metropolitan Museum of Art and JPMorgan.
